How it all began.
A little about me;I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts at The Otago Polytechnic School of Art at the end of 1996 majoring in Photography. On completion I worked as a Photographers assistant in Christchurch, New Zealand before heading of on my OE to Scotland, Ireland and a cruise ship in Caribbean and Alaskan waters.
My work at Art school was landscape based and culminated in a joint exhibition with New Zealand Printmaker Marilynn Webb at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery in 1997 "From Hodges, to Hodgekins, to here". While working in Ireland at the "Delphi Adventure Centre" I found myself communicating what I wanted to say with my artwork through the process of facilitating clients experiences in the rugged West Coast landscape. On my return to New Zealand I continued to do this as a guide on the world famous "Milford Track" in Fiordland, New Zealand.
It was while in Fiordland that I started to develop my landscape photography through the use of a grid format consisting of 36 individual images. I researched the turn of the century exploits of Alfred Burton(Burton Brothers Photography, Dunedin) who was given the task of documenting and photographing for promotional purposes, Sutherland Falls and the newly developing walking track from the head of Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound on the west coast of New Zealand. Through my studies I was familiar with the works of American greats Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. I somehow wanted to acknowledge them all and the access to special wilderness areas they had helped people experience and understand. My photogrid work allowed me to capture the small details of a scene that make ups it's whole like those I researched.
Leaving Fiordland saw me study at the Christchurch College of Education. Upon completion of my diploma I took an assistant teachers role at Nelson College for Boys. While there I took my grid idea in a different direction wanting to produce smaller more intimate works. The result was a series of works made in and around Awaroa Lodge in the Able Tasman National park.
